The only subtitles that could be found were the hard-coded subs on one of the rips. Those have been converted to text (.srt), including song lyrics near the end and closing credits. Proofreading has reduced the errors and omissions almost to zero.
These CHT (Chinese-traditional, or Mandarin) subs would be helpful to someone willing to create polished hand-made English-language subs.
Until then, here are computer-translated subs in about 100 languages.
The movie itself is generally agreed to be lamentable in many respects -- script, acting, photography/editing. Why, then, did it become so popular with many Taipei viewers? The easy answer is: publicity. Another is the fun viewers have anticipating and experiencing the egregious defects. You may want to find out for yourself. (Don't miss the dog that never moves.)
And, there is the serious theme that moral deficiencies perceived in others may not really be so unjustified as they seem to be.
