Savage is found wandering dazed in London with a bump on his head and no memory of what he did the day before. Later Inspector Thorne and Sergeant Padget from the CID come to see Savage with a lighter with a 918th crest that was found in a murdered woman's flat. Savage recognizes the lighter as his own and begins to suspect that maybe he is the killer.
