Il film è tratto dal romanzo In Cold Blood di Truman Capote e narra di due malviventi
che usciti di prigione tentano una rapina e finiscono per uccidere inutilmente una famiglia intera.
La polizia li bracca a lungo e poi li cattura. Verranno impiccati cinque anni dopo.

È nota la storia del romanzo di Truman Capote: nel novembre ‘59 lo scrittore fu colpito
da una breve notizia di cronaca che registrava la strage della famiglia Clutter a Holcomb (Kansas),
4 cadaveri legati e imbavagliati, uccisi a colpi di fucile. Capote andò sul posto per conto del New Yorker
e iniziò un’inchiesta che sarebbe durata 6 anni: fino alla notte del 14 aprile 1965, quando i due giovani
assassini Dick Hickok e Perry Smith furono impiccati nel penitenziario di Lansing. Sadismo e pietà si
fondono nelle pagine del best-seller di Capote in un amalgama di alto livello letterario che ha suscitato
molte polemiche. »
