The German Thonar Records is doing a good job. Some time ago, the excellent Pantheon Legio Musica album was released, and now the Abandoned Place's debut is out on the market. Abandoned Place is a project by Romain Lemenorel, whom you might know from March Of Heroes. These are quite different acts though: Abandoned Place brings you eight dark ambient soundscapes that are more alike Atrium Carceri or Nordvargr. "Shadow Of Memory" is however a rather warm record, more sensitive possibly. By combining threatening dark tones with a sferic atmosphere, a good ambiance is set. The result is an hour of haunting music that doesn't bore easily, but is not very sophisticated either.

The big advantage Abandoned Place has is that it sounds 'real': no half-hour long tones or nervous wind sampling, but decent music. The variation is there, the hour of music is enjoyable throughout all eight songs (all of them without a name), so aspite from the rather standard artwork I can only recommend this release. Well worth your time and money.
