Agonia är det panoramiska dramat om den sibiriske munken Rasputins effekt på tsarmaktens sista trevande år innan revolutionen 1917. Ryssland står i krig sedan tre år tillbaks och samhället står inför kollaps. Men lyxen och korruptionen inom adeln blomstrar likt aldrig förr. Rebellerna anses utgöra blott ett magert hot när kejsarens gode vän Rasputin får ett fastare grepp om det turbulenta styret. Elem Klimovs mästerverk om religiös fundamentalism och tygellös maktkamp gjordes redan 1975, men blev på grund av alltför utpräglat sex och våld totalförbjuden av ryska censuren och släpptes först tio år senare. Efter en specialvisning vid Venedigs filmfestival 1982 tog Agonia hem jurypriset för bästa film.

Om regissören Elem Klimov:
Elem Klimovs (1933 – 2003) karriär som regissör sträckte sig från sent 50-tal till åren innan kommunismens slutliga fall. Komedierna han gjorde under 60-talet (No Holiday for Inochkin och Adventures of a Dentist) blev oerhört populära, men omstridda av sovjetiska censuren för deras subversiva drag. Klimatet inom filmindustrin hårdnade under 70-talet och även om Klimov försökte blidka censurens krav lagrades hans Rasputin-skildring Agonia i hela tio år innan den släpptes på bio. Innehållet ansågs för politiskt känsligt. En vändning kom dock när Gorbatjovs glasnost-politik medförde en mer utbredd frihet för konstnärligt uttryck. Klimov valdes till ordförande i det nybildade facket för filmskapare som ett erkännande för hans långa kamp mot statlig censur. I samband med hedersutnämningen hade Klimovs sista film premiär – den våldsamma Gå och se om en vitrysk pojkes upplevelser av andra världskriget.

Russia, 1916. Be it by craft or madness, Rasputin exercises power over the indecisive Nicholas, and the religious Czarina worships the Siberian as God. He manipulates the Czar in his relations with the Duma and influences the choice of a new premier. Rasputin assaults a baroness; her husband is jailed for defending her, and she must offer sexual favors to Rasputin to save her husband. The Czar finally orders Rasputin from St. Petersburg, but somehow he enters the palace and, in a disheveled trance, convinces the Czar to make a disastrous change in war strategy. A cadre of nobles take matters into their own hands and arrange a last dinner party for the interloping monk.
