Alexander den store (född 356 f.Kr.) är en av världshistoriens mest betydande gestalter. Men vem var han egentligen? En tidig globaliseringsförespråkare? En framsynt ledare som ville skapa en idealisk världsstat? Eller en maktlysten tyrann som inte skydde några medel i sin jakt efter ära och ryktbarhet?
Karriären inleddes vid nyss fyllda tjugo år och förde honom på ett enastående krigståg från dagens Albanien i väster till Indien i öster. På ett decennium förändrade Alexander världen för alltid. Han dog i Babylon under mystiska omständigheter vid 32 års ålder. Legenden om honom genljuder än idag – i Hollywoodfilmer, skönlitterära bestsellers och politisk propaganda. Problemet är att den historiske Alexander med tiden har försvunnit under en väv av överdrifter och osanningar.
I historikern Bengt Liljegrens nya bok skingras detta töcken. Liljegren har noga analyserat de antika källskrifterna, skurit bort sagostoffet och myterna, och blottlägger här den verklige Alexander III av Makedonien. Och det fantastiska är att den historiska verkligheten visar sig vara minst lika spännande som legenden.
Alexander den store är inte bara en berättelse om genialisk krigföring och ofattbar grymhet, utan även en gripande skildring om passionerad kärlek mellan män, komplicerade barn-föräldrarelationer och svårlösta mordfall.
Bengt Liljegrens bok är den första moderna biografi om Alexander som publicerats på svenska sedan 1966. Författaren har tidigare haft stora framgångar med böckerna Karl XII. En biografi (2000) och Regenter i Sverige (2004).
