The project formed in sunny California in 1970. The name "Ambrosia" ("Food of the Gods") aptly describes the style of this band, which performed art rock with an abundance of keyboards, orchestrations, and vocal harmonies, elements reminiscent of the progressive rock of the time. The band has its own unique, recognizable vision of the progressive style, but parallels can still be drawn with such bands as the Beach Boys, the Beatles, King Crimson, the Allman Brothers Band, Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Genesis. The original lineup of Ambrosia included David Pack (guitar, vocals), Joe Puerta (bass, vocals), Burleigh Drummond (drums, percussion, vocals), and Christopher North (keyboards, vocals). In 1975, their first long-playing album, "Ambrosia," was released, recorded with producer Freddie Piro. The debut was a success: "Holdin' On To Yesterday" reached number 17 on the charts, and "Nice, Nice, Very Nice" enjoyed significant FM airplay. The album was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Engineered Recording, which was unsurprising, considering Alan Parsons was behind the mixing desk. Alan also produced the Ambrosia group's second album, and the full band participated in the recording of the debut album, "The Alan Parsons Project." After "Somewhere I've Never Traveled," the title track of which became an FM favorite, the band transferred to Warner Bros. Records. There, Ambrosia debuted with "Life Beyond L.A.", which differed from its previous two works in its stripped-down arrangements and increased austerity. The album enjoyed considerable commercial success, thanks in part to the song "How Much I Feel," which reached number three on the national charts. At the time, the band also earned a solid live reputation, confidently performing alongside Fleetwood Mac and the Doobie Brothers
