Andrei Eshpai was the son of a composer, and the father a respected film director. He belonged to that group of musicians that neither revolted against the authorities in the last decades of the Soviet regime, nor offered up hack works by the dozens extolling its virtues. His Vioin Concerto #2 is a transformative rather than developmental work, dedicated to and influenced by his teacher, Miaskovsky.
