April si è avvicinata al jazz in età adulta, quando era una studentessa universitaria all'Indiana University. Ha appreso le basi del canto in un coro chiamato The Singing Hoosiers e ha approfondito le sue conoscenze studiando con noti cantanti jazz come Sachal Vasandani, Tierney Sutton (e successivamente, durante gli studi di specializzazione alla Manhattan School of Music), e Theo Bleckmann. Nel 2023 ha vinto l'International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition, un'esperienza che ha rafforzato il suo amore per la First Lady della canzone. Questo album tributo mette ulteriormente in luce la sua ammirazione per l'arte di Ella.
