En ce ténébreux mois de novembre, la narratrice voit son mari la quitter sans préavis et sa meilleure amie lui confier son fils de quatre ans. Qu'à cela ne tienne, elle partira pour un tour de son île noire, seule avec Tumi, étrange petit bonhomme, presque sourd, avec de grosses loupes en guise de lunettes.Avec un humour fantasque et une drôlerie décapante, l'Embellie ne cesse de nous enchanter par cette relation cocasse, de plus en plus attentive, émouvante entre la voyageuse et son minuscule passager.

Audur Ava Ólafsdóttir est née en 1958 à Reykjavik. Elle a fait des études d'histoire de l'art à Paris. Directrice du Musée de l'Université d'Islande, elle est très active dans la promotion de l'art. À ce titre, elle a donné de nombreuses conférences et organisé plusieurs expositions d'artistes. Il y a chez la grande romancière islandaise - dont on garde en mémoire le merveilleux Rosa candida - un tel emportement rieur, une telle drôlerie des situations comme des pensées qui s'y attachent, un vrai bain de jouvence littéraire, ses romans ressemblent à la vie.
