The Earth’s orbit is not exactly the sexiest of subjects. I can only imagine that BBC producers had finally conceded there were no documentaries left to be made featuring cute “wild” polar bear cubs or former rock stars gazing wistfully into the night sky when they commissioned Orbit: Earth’s Extraordinary Journey

But although there are varieties of mould growing on my shower curtain that would make more likely candidates for a BBC camera crew’s attention than the 23-degree tilt of our planet’s axis, it’s a good thing the latter persisted with their unpromising subject. Because for breadth of material, this turned out to be the most relentlessly informative science film I’ve seen since David Attenborough pointed out that the blue parts of our planet
