William Emanuel Cobham Jr. dit Billy, né le 16 mai 1944 à Panama, est un batteur de jazz et compositeur panaméen.
Célèbre pour son jazz fusion dans les années 1970, avec le Mahavishnu Orchestra, il met en place un style de batterie influencé par le rock et le funk.
Billy Cobham a joué avec des musiciens jazz tels que Horace Silver et Joe Henderson, il a donc ses racines dans le jazz et non dans le rock.
Les inconditionnels du jazz-funk des années 1970, ne cherchez pas plus loin. Cet ensemble de cinq disques reprend les premières années prolifiques du batteur
du Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham, entre 1973 et 1975, et il se panache de feux d'artifice de guitare rock, de batteries et de synthés hyperactifs,
et de riffs de cor exclamatifs à la James Brown. Mais Cobham était, et reste, un penseur musical subtil ainsi qu'un batteur phénoménal,
et l'ensemble exploite des idées audacieuses, une variété thématique et des solos impressionnants comme les Brecker Brothers,
les guitaristes John Abercrombie et John Scofield, et le petit claviériste bulgare connu et doué Milcho Leviev.
