Synopsis:

In the summer of 1979, deep within East Germany under the oppressive rule of the GDR, the Strelzyk and Wetzel families harbor a dangerous, unthinkable secret. Desperate to provide a future of freedom for their children, they spend over two years meticulously stitching together thousands of tiny fabric scraps to construct a massive, makeshift hot air balloon. Their first daring midnight launch ends in a catastrophic crash just a few hundred meters short of the West German border wall. As the East German secret police (Stasi) rapidly uncover the abandoned balloon remnants and launch a ruthless, nationwide manhunt, the two families find themselves in a frantic, nerve-shredding race against the clock. Surrounded by informants and with the Stasi closing in, they must quickly gather enough materials to build a second balloon before their lives are permanently shattered.
