Бэрри родился и вырос в Манчестере. Любовь к музыке к фильмам, и панковское движение 70х подвели его к карьере музыканта. В период с 1978 по 1982 год Бэрри играл на бас-гитаре в пост-панковской группе Magazine.
Затем в 1984 году он вместе с Ником Кейвом (Nick Cave) основал группу The Bad Seeds.
В 1988 году Barry Adamson релизом своего дебютного альбома «The Man With The Golden Arm» начал сольную карьеру, получившую широкой отклик критики. Далее последовала серия из имеющих собственный характер и тематически связанных между собой альбомов: «Moss Side Story» (1989), «The Taming Of The Shrewd» (1989), «Delusion» (1991) «Soul Murder» (1992), «The Negro Inside Me» (1993), «Oedipus Schmoedipus» (1996) и «As Above So Below» (1998).
