In oktober 1941 breekt het Duitse 11e leger onder leiding van opperbevelhebber Erich von Manstein door de Russische linies. Dit is het begin van een serie bloedige confrontaties die de Russen 2 complete legers zal kostten. Voor zijn overwinning en de inname van de havenstad Sebastopol wordt Von Manstein benoemt tot generaal-veldmaarschalk.
Na desastreuze verliezen aan Duitse zijde bij Stalingrad en Kursk, keerde het tij echter al snel. Afgesloten en geïsoleerd en geconfronteerd met zware bombardementen moesten de Duitsers Sebastopol in mei 1944 opgeven. Dit geheel tegen de orders van Hitler in.
12 Duitse en Roemeense divisies worden hierbij compleet vernietigd, 25.000 soldaten worden gevangen genomen.
