A Oslo, dei lampi di luce provenienti dal profondo dell'Oceano Atlantico segnalano la comparsa improvvisa, nelle acque, di un gruppo di persone: i "Beforeigners", ovvero uomini provenienti da epoche passate trasportati nel XXI secolo. Mentre il fenomeno non accenna a diminuire, i nuovi arrivati cercano di integrarsi nella società norvegese, e tra questi, la vichinga Alfhildr Enginsdottir, primo agente "multi-temporale" della polizia cittadina, che affianca il detective Lars Haaland nelle indagini su un misterioso omicidio.
