REVIEW

This 1993 album shows the band relying less on the sonic experimentation that marked their later work, than on pure punk exuberance. Tracks like "Ride" and "Draag" seethe with a manic fury that creates a pervading sense of tension and urgency throughout the album. Also, the band's pop sensibilities shine through the hectic clatter of the title track and "Martian Dance Invasion," on which guitarist Michelle Bodine assumes vocal duties. On these tracks and others are indications of the frantic cacophony that would be further developed on Brainiac's later albums.

Whereas Smack Bunny Baby had shown Brainiac to be a band that was still developing, Bonsai Superstar is an astounding blast of cohesive madness. The band finds its voice and vision and moves light years ahead of their peers (as well as where they had been musically only a year earlier). From the opening moments of "Hot Metal Dobermans," it is apparent that listeners are in the hands of an assured, ambitious group of musicians -- including the newly arrived John Schmersal on guitar. The music is far more adventurous than on the previous album, incorporating more raw noise and sound effects, and even constructing "Fucking with the Altimeter" around a series of spoken samples. But lead singer Tim Taylor is the star of this show -- his combination of a Betty Boop falsetto and an Elvis-style croon on "Flypaper" is mesmerizing, and his explosive strut through "Sexual Frustration" exudes pure star power. Bonsai Superstar captures a band that was ahead of their time and still moving forward.

Review

On their final full-length album, Brainiac move further into the unchartered territory that they explored on Bonsai Superstar, and perhaps because of that, the album seems initially less exciting. However, while they take a somewhat smaller creative step between these two albums than between Bonsai Superstar and Smack Bunny Baby, Hissing Prigs in Static Couture nonetheless offers up a fascinating dose of space-age sound bites, falsetto vocals and chant-along choruses. The opening four tracks are astounding, especially "Pussyfootin'" and the loopy "This Little Piggy." The middle of the album drags a bit, but it comes to a blistering conclusion with "Nothing Ever Changes" (recorded by Steve Albini) and "I Am a Cracked Machine."

Now, this was a band on the run. Leaving their trademark second hand moogs and crancked up rhythm acrobatics behind, tumbling into bleepy electro territory, with Jim O'rourke credited for "boogie swithcing", this is no longer "just" a rock band, in the sense that they had always been a distinctive group, but here they were being eaten up by their sampler patches and kick drum triggers, dropping the guitars on their heads.

The micro electric dub overtones on "The Turnover" and the broken ambient excursions are unprecedented and mingle well with the prevailing space junk rock antics. The very fact that this the last thing they got to work on, before what was supposed to be the band's fourth longplayer, makes this well worth looking up. And the rowdy recording levels only do this artifact good.

Biography

Well after the death of new wave, Brainiac formed in 1992 with a sound that perfectly epitomized the uptight, herky-jerky tension of the early-'80s movement, as well as its warped sense of song structure and electronic breakdown. The band came together in Dayton, OH, originally the basement experiments of vocalist/keyboard player Tim Taylor and bassist Juan Monasterio. After recruiting guitarist Michelle Bodine and drummer Tyler Trent, Brainiac began playing around the Midwest and hooked up with Limited Potential Records, which released the single "Super Duper Seven" in September 1992. After another single, a split with Bratmobile on Dayton's 12X12 label, Brainiac signed with Grass Records. The group's debut album Smack Bunny Baby, produced by Girls Against Boys' Eli Janney, appeared in mid-1993. During 1994, Brainiac replaced Bodine with guitarist John Schmersal and released their second album, Bonsai Superstar. After a tour on Lollapalooza's second stage, a performance in Chicago impressed the indie label heavyweight Touch & Go, which signed the band and issued their third album, Hissing Prigs in Static Couture, in early 1996.

Brainiac released an EP, Electro-Shock for President, in April 1997, prior to entering the studio to record their fourth album. Over the course of 1996-1997, their profile had grown, and there were rumors that major labels like DreamWorks were interested in signing them after the new album was completed.
