Бёрн-Джонс (Burne-Jones) Эдуард Коли (1833-1898), английский живописец, мастер декоративно-прикладного искусства. Родился в Бирмингеме, в скромной семье столяра-рамочника. Принадлежал к младшему поколению прерафаэлитов. Стремясь к возрождению духовности и наивной поэзии средневекового и раннего ренессансного искусства, Бёрн-Джонс стилизовал формы своих произведений в духе итальянской живописи XV века.
Декоративно-изощренные композиции Бёрн-Джонса отличаются чертами романтической взволнованности и идеализации, гибким линейным ритмом. Между 1859 и 1873 годами Берн-Джонс совершает несколько путешествий в Италию, В стиле художника с этих пор заметны признаки новых влияний, что в конце концов приносит ему славу и рыцарское звание, дарованное художнику, как открывателю новой эпохи в искусстве. Известность Берн-Джонса растет, выходя далеко за пределы Англии. В 1882 году на Всемирной выставке в Париже Бёрн-Джонс вместе с Фредериком Лейтоном представляет Англию.
История движения прерафаэлитов закончилась вместе с творчеством Бёрна-Джонса, оставив мастерам XX века большое наследство благодаря возвышенной вере в искусство и творческим достижениям. Живопись прерафаэлитов являет собой переход от романтизма к символизму начала ХХ столетия, который вновь открыл простор фантазии, устремлённости за пределы повседневности. В картинах Берн-Джонса современников привлекала грация задумчивых фигур с их идеальной красотой, вносящих ностальгическую нотку. Полотна Берн-Джонса отличаются особым ритмом и пластикой, полны аллегорического смысла: "В картине я вижу красивый романтический сон о том, чего никогда не было и никогда не будет"... Увлечение Берн-Джонса абстрактными вариациями поставило его в ряд художников, бессознательно поглощенных темами, которые вдохновляли новое поколение живописцев. Как известно, его полотнами в начале 1890-х, в Париже, восхищался Гоген, а на рубеже веков, в Барселоне, - Пикассо. Умер Бёрн-Джонс в Лондоне 17 июня 1898г.
