It was a long since forgotten night in 2003 when Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar created Beats for Bars – music drawn from every genre and mashed up in ways previously unimaginable into your ideal soundtrack. Volume II was made in 2005 – same concept, different material. You can still hear both Volumes of Beats for Bars in the cool bars of West London, and there are still arguments about which one is better.

And so Caned & Able was spawned...

There were no plans to do anything commercially with Caned & Able, but before we knew it we were recording original material and it was simply a case of whoever was in the room at the time was in the band. Paolo Ogliari was brought in to assist on production, Chris Bell on drums and Jon Klein on additional guitars. By 2008 the debut album 'Smoke...' was released on Malicious Damage Records (alongside The Orb, Killing Joke, Shriekback).

Again using a hybrid of vocal, acoustic and electro styles, the album was revered as the stoner's perfect soundtrack. The very first recording of Caned & Able was a track called 'Deuteronomy', and though there is an alternative version on 'Smoke...' the original version was released after the album as an EP. The rest of 2008 was a bit of an experimental period that saw Caned & Able getting into remixing, working with artists such as The Verve, Maple Bee and The Sun Paulo.

2009 was when we dipped our toes into the live DJ scene – well sort of... We played for Lily Allen at her 'It's Not Me, It's You' album launch party, playing with The Orb at Malicious Damage events, along with countless DJ sets in Selfridges on Oxford Street, London. The mashups were still happening too, with 'Superchunk' mixes being broadcast on Xfm and championed by the wonderful Eddy Temple-Morris.

2010 was the year that Caned & Able started to push the boundaries of their hybrid sounds, producing in progress and with the arrival of guitarist and co-producer Raj Vivekananthan, all sorts of unexpected tangents were occurring.

A couple of weeks later, an old friend of Raj's turned up at the studio. Enter Big G...

The rest is history.

Early in 2011 we were joined by Mel Draisey on vocals, strings and keyboards.

After a series of blazing live shows at the 'Dark Matter' album launches and UK festivals last year, the band mixed 'Black To Comm' – the new Primal Scream concert album and DVD.

The new album 'Cosmosis' is now finished and will be released 6 August 2012.

This promises to be a great year for Caned & Able.

Well this might be a brave thing to say, but you're talking about a modern day Screamadelica here. No, really…

From the start it kicks off with It Keeps Me Up, a tune that makes you wonder if the nineties have just been dragged from Manchester kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century. After the chilling vocals, strings, synths and beats of Lullaby and the summery I've Got You Now beautifully throw your senses into oblivion, A Million Light Years feels like an epic lift-off into eternal space and time travel.

Once you're out there (and you will be), Three Of A Kind hypnotically takes you round what can only be described as an interstellar poker table, with added psychosis, and dub. Anna Jacyszyn also provides a uniquely stunning guest vocal.

By now you really need to be brought back down to Earth, and you are. Cheekily stealing vocal lines from Should I Stay Or Should I Go? by The Clash, Confusion is a bringing together of the disillusioned paranoid masses.

Probably the most poignant moment for the band is the orchestral epic No More Roller Coasters, it's the point when you understand that the album was actually starting to dictate the band members instead of the band writing the album. But you know what they say - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and this is a strong song.

We're flying now with Trip To Arizona, and it is a trip. Delicate synths, tight beats, Verve-esque guitars, pulsating bass, stunning strings and piano lines eventually send you into hyperplane with dirty soaring synths and vocals that could be mistaken for a Chemical Brothers moment from Trainspotting.

Finally the title track lulls you into a nostalgic trip down memory lane, gives you slight swagger in your step, takes you on a little ride into psychedelic prog-rock spaciness, before smacking you in the face with the biggest guitar sounds you've ever heard, and culminating in the lines "The target's the same, it's just the weapons we change. Welcome to the human race…"

What a ride!
