Le Messie s’appuie sur le livret de Charles Jennens qui sélectionne des pages de l’Ancien et du Nouveau testament, soulignant la nature divine et miraculeuse de Jésus, les prophéties énoncées dans l’Ancien testament, s’accomplissant bien dans le Nouveau. Pourtant pas de drame tragique évoquant la Passion et le Sacrifice ni la Résurrection après la mort, mais comme un oratorio, la lumière de la croyance, la ferveur de la foi et de l’espérance qui trouvent dans les images musicales, toujours dramatiques – c’est là le génie lyrique et théâtral de Haendel-, l’accomplissement attendu. Au début des années 1740 – la partition a été “expédiée” en peu de temps (3 semaines seulement) à la fin de l’été 1741 (Jennens se plaindra du manque d’inspiration musicale, d’une indignité patente au regard de l’élévation du livret, en particulier vis à vis de l’ouverture…), le compositeur affirme pourtant sa maturité, réussissant dans le langage de l’oratorio, une évocation pleine de souffle et d’emportements (mesurés cependant) qui passe par l’engagement des chœurs (très présents, acteurs principaux dans cette fresque contemplative plus que narrative), et où les airs solistes développent les sentiments d’admiration, de certitude fervente, d’épanouissement… créé en 1742 à Dublin, puis en 1743 à Londres.

Un très bel enregistrement qui peut surprendre par les modulations de certains morceaux chantés ("Comfort ye my people") quand on a dans l'oreille l'interprétation de Gardiner chez Philips toujours en tête depuis de nombreuses années des discographies comparées. Cependant la beauté musicale et interprétative est là; le texte est mis en valeur par un tempo parfois moins rapide que chez d'autres chefs et la diction parfaite des solistes (les voix féminines !) et du choeur; car la prise de son est excellente. Sans entrer dans les détails, on peut préférer le choeur "Lift up your heads", plus puissant chez Gardiner, à celui entendu ici, mais l' "hallelujah" est excellent ; la basse est en léger retrait, moins profonde, pour "The trumpet shall sound" par rapport à Gardiner. Malgré ces quelques réserves forcément subjectives, l'ensemble déborde d'émotions ("He was despised") là où la beauté de Gardiner a parfois une certaine froideur. En somme une excellente interprétation qui pourrait presque être la référence moderne de l'oeuvre.
