Dans une métropole nord-américaine, le corps atrocement mutilé d'un homme est découvert dans la cour arrière d'une épicerie de quartier. Trois autres assassinats, tous plus violents les uns que les autres, s'enchaînent en un temps record. Toutes les victimes sont des hommes et la mises en scène de leur mort est d'une horreur absolue. Il n'en faut pas plus pour que l'on parle d'un tueur en série.

Sepp Ganser, enquêteur chevronné à la criminelle, est temporairement séparé de son coéquipier Gabriel Sykes et contraint de faire équipe avec la profileuse Hélène Laffont. L'hypothèse qu'avance cette dernière veut que les victimes soient elles-mêmes des tueurs en série, tués comme ils ont tués leurs victimes.

Les primaires battant leur plein et les deux équipiers n'ont que trois semaines pour résoudre l'affaire. Mais la réalité est à mille lieues de tout ce qu'ils auraient pu imaginer.
