Caitlin, douze ans, habite avec sa mère dans un modeste appartement d'une banlieue de Seattle. Afin d'échapper à la solitude et à la grisaille de sa vie quotidienne, chaque jour, après l'école, elle court à l'aquarium pour se plonger dans les profondeurs du monde marin qui la fascine. Là, elle rencontre un vieil homme qui semble partager sa passion pour les poissons et devient peu à peu son confident. Mais la vie de Caitlin bascule le jour où sa mère découvre cette amitié et lui révèle le terrible secret qui les lie toutes deux à cet homme.
