Sweden is arguably the home of Melodic Death Metal. Deals Death are a band based in Gothenburg, where they are forging their path through the myriad of similar Swedish bands with their 3rd album ‘Point Zero Solution’. They are a band that have certainly paid their dues, having been on tour with Scar Symmetry, Dark Tranquillity and Hypocrisy.

11 tracks long, the album has a few highlights but never really takes that all important step to help it rise above the crowd. ‘Facing the Echoes’ is one of the tracks that strives to impress. Featuring a catchy riff and lot of keyboard malarkey, it hit’s the spot, as does the song immediately following, ‘Escalation’, again with a killer riff and with the omnipresent keys. ‘Passion for Infinity’ opens with some eerie keys and then a meaty as fuck guitar kicks in. This is my favourite track on the album, showing a great deal ability in song construction. Alas, not all tracks are as excellent as this.

A few of the tracks are slightly formulaic. The title track and album opener ‘Point Zero Solution’, didn’t float this reviewers particular boat and whilst there is nothing technically wrong with ‘Flatline’, it just sounds like I have heard it before. The vocals on ‘The Separation’ start to grate a little although, in it’s defence, it has a really cool guitar solo towards the end of the track.

Unfortunately, I found ‘Point Zero Solution’ a difficult album to listen all the way through in one sitting. I found my attention wandering and that, I feel, is Deals Death’s problem. They have released a technically proficient, well produced album that is just ever so slightly unexciting and verging on dull. Listen to it in small, EP sized chunks, it flows better, otherwise you will just find yourself switching the album off half way through.
