Deep Purple sound charged and powerful as ever on =1, their 23rd studio album, and one that arrives more than 50 years since the band started rocking. Driven as always by guitars that are distorted but never too crunchy, undercurrents of cool organ and slightly funky riffing, and the classic hard rock belting of Ian Gillan's vocals, =1 is produced by rock & roll's finest dial-turner, Bob Ezrin, guaranteeing a crisp and balanced sound to accompany songs that aspire to the same level as some of Deep Purple's previous best. Each of the album's 13 tracks has a complex and intricate song structure without ever going full-on prog rock. "Old-Fangled Thing" is a classic boogie rock shuffle with harmonizing guitar leads, "Lazy Sod" saunters and struts its way to a stomping chorus, and the psychedelic lyrics and wandering riffs of "Portable Door" capture the same cosmic rock energy the band perfected on their '70s hits. "Pictures of You" is a catchy and tense midtempo rocker that feels more like a warning than a love song, while "I'll Catch You" stretches out in a slow-burning blues framework. =1 is far more energetic, fun, and inventive than what's usually reasonable to expect from a band as far into their journey as Deep Purple, but it speaks to their creativity as much as it serves as a reminder of how different they always were from their peers. Even 23 albums in, they're still creating sounds that maintain their roots as they go to new places.
