La historia trata de un adolescente llamado Oozora Reiji, es un estudiante de instituto bastante aburrido, no tiene nada de espacial que no se toma las cosas en serioUn día, su amiga de la infancia, Yukino Maiko, le cuenta sobre un videojuego de realidad virtual llamado Dragon Drive y lo invita a jugarlo. En el juego le es otorgado un dragón para poder participar. Inesperadamente, Reiji es bastante bueno en el juego o, por lo menos, es especial y su dragón es capaz de liberar gran poder cuando se encuentran en situaciones de peligrosas. Sin embargo, durante un entrenamiento especial del juego, sucede un accidente y Reiji se teletransporta a otro mundo donde los caballeros del dragón luchan unos contra otros.
