Hoffman, a medical college dropout, left his Los Angeles home for New York and the Broadway stage. He was short, not particularly attractive, and afflicted with an appalling case of acne. Not an auspicious start for a young man soon to attract the ardent attentions of two generations of women for his role in The Graduate. As his popularity with the public increased, so did the rumours surrounding his professional behaviour.
Hoffman is not the easiest of men to work with, as testified by his peers. He is also a perfectionist with an obsessive compulsion for realism that made him deprive himself of sleep for just one scene of the Marathon Man and visit his daughters school to test out Tootise on an unsuspecting audience.
Dustin is a powerful insight into the man behind such blockbusters as Midnight Cowboy, Kramer v Kramer and Rain Man, his life and work.
