Early Irish art was created in a milieu very different from that which produced what, in modern times, we distinguish as works of art. In the pre-Norman period in particular, most works, for example, are unsigned: the artists remain anonymous. The distinction between what is a work of art and what is a work of utility is rarely clear; to a great extent we are dealing with 'applied art'
