Де Витте первоначально рисовал портреты как на мифологические, так и на религиозные темы. После переезда из Дельфта в Амстердам в 1651 году де Витте специализировался все больше на представлении церковных интерьеров. Он нарисовал старую церковь в Амстердаме почти от угла и до угла. В ряде случаев он комбинировал детали разных церквей, изображая некий обобщённый храм. Но особенно его занимали посетители церкви, нередко — в сопровождении собак, игра света и тени в церковном интерьере. Превосходное чувство композиции Де Витте, объединенное с его использованием света, создало атмосферу интерьеров, которые кажутся правдивыми и реальными.

Де Витте родился в Алкмааре и изучал геометрию у своего отца, школьного учителя. В 1636 году он вступает в местную Гильдию Св. Луки. Поселяется в Роттердаме, затем он переезжает в Дельфт, где учится вместе с Эвертом ван Алстом. В 1651 де Витте поселяется в Амстердаме. В 1655 году его первая жена, Гирдж Арентс, умирает. Он женится на 23-летней сироте, Лисбет ван дер Пласе, которая оказывала плохое влияние на юную дочь де Витте. В декабре 1659 обе были арестованы за воровство. Лисбет, беременная, должна была покинуть город сроком на шесть лет. Она жила вне городских стен и умерла в 1663 году. После ареста жены и дочери, де Витте был вынужден связать себя договором с Амстердамским нотариусом и торговцем произведениями искусства Йорисом де Виджсом, сдавая всю свою работу в обмен на комнату, управление и 800 гульденов ежегодно. Де Витте периодически нарушал условия контракта, поэтому ему был предъявлен иск дилером. Несколько покровителей предоставляли де Витту поддержку, но эти отношения складывались не очень хорошо, поскольку он был склонен кричать на клиентов и на людей, наблюдающих за ним во время работы в церквях. Отчеты говорят о его игорной привычке и драке с Герардом де Лерессом. Согласно показаниям Арнольда Хоубрэкена, после увеличения арендной платы де Витте повесился на мосту канала в 1692 году. Веревка оборвалась и де Витте утонул. Поскольку канал замерз той ночью, его труп не был найден, и только спустя одиннадцать недель его тело обнаружили. Такая вот Санта-Барбара.
