Lorsque Eric Clapton troque sa Stratocaster habituelle contre une Martin acoustique en janvier 1992 pour enregistrer le désormais légendaire album Unplugged, il est déjà considéré comme un maître absolu de la guitare électrique.
L'album live présente le légendaire guitariste accompagné d'un petit groupe jouant des versions acoustiques de ses propres chansons et de quelques standards du blues. Sorti la même année, l'album est devenu un succès incontesté, se vendant à 19 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde et remportant six Grammys, dont ceux du "Disque de l'année" et de la "Chanson de l'année".
