Description

* Gottlob Frege - Collected Works on Mathematics (12 books)
GOTTLOB FREGE (1848–1925)
was a German mathematician, logician, and philosopher who is widely regarded as the father of modern mathematical logic and analytic philosophy. Spending the vast majority of his professional life teaching mathematics at the University of Jena, Frege worked in relative obscurity, with his contemporary peers largely ignoring or misunderstanding his radical insights. Today, however, he is widely revered as the most influential innovator in formal logic since Aristotle. His pioneering work unified mathematics and philosophy, providing a rigorous foundation for symbolic reasoning and the philosophy of language.
Frege's lifelong intellectual pursuit was "logicism"—the philosophical thesis that arithmetic is entirely reducible to logic and that mathematical truths are ultimately analytic logical truths. To accomplish this monumental task, he realized he first needed to construct a deductive tool far superior to traditional Aristotelian syllogistic logic, which was completely inadequate for complex mathematical proofs. This drove him to invent modern mathematical logic from scratch, introducing concepts like variables, quantifiers, and mathematical functions to the analysis of sentences.
Frege introduced his revolutionary logical system in his first major work, BEGRIFFSSCHRIFT (1879), translated variously as "Concept Script" or "Conceptual Notation". In this groundbreaking work, he developed a new formula language for pure thought that could successfully represent nested quantifiers and complex deductive inferences. It completely transformed logic from a branch of rhetoric into a precise mathematical discipline. Frege then sought to apply this newly minted system to demonstrate his logicist thesis, starting with a non-technical, philosophical defense titled THE FOUNDATIONS OF ARITHMETIC (1884). Frege fiercely attacked rival mathematical philosophies, such as psychologism (the idea that numbers are mental constructs) and empiricism (the idea that numbers are derived from physical objects). He argued instead that numbers are entirely objective, abstract logical entities, famously establishing the "context principle"—the idea that a word only has meaning within the context of a full proposition.
The culmination of his contemporary life’s work came with his massive, two-volume definitive textbook, THE BASIC LAWS OF ARITHMETIC (1893–1903), in which Frege attempted to formally derive all standard laws of arithmetic from his purely logical axioms. Tragically, as the second volume was going to print in 1902, the young Bertrand Russell sent Frege a letter revealing a fatal flaw in one of the system's core axioms (specifically "Basic Law V"), a contradiction now famously known as Russell’s Paradox. Though this structural collapse devastated Frege and prematurely ended his grand logicist project, his brilliant framework remained invaluable and directly paved the way for subsequent philosophical giants like Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Rudolf Carnap.
The broader reception of Frege's ideas was largely secured posthumously through extensive preservation, compilation, and translation efforts. The highly influential volume TRANSLATIONS FROM THE PHILOSOPHICAL WRITINGS OF FREGE (1952) by Peter Geach and Max Black first introduced English speakers to his groundbreaking semantic essays on meaning and reference. Scholars later systematically organized his scattered articles, essays, and unreleased materials into POSTHUMOUS WRITINGS (1979) and the comprehensive COLLECTED PAPERS ON MATHEMATICS, LOGIC, AND PHILOSOPHY (1984), exposing the full evolution of his thoughts. Furthermore, his extensive professional debates with contemporary intellectual peers were made available in the PHILOSOPHICAL AND MATHEMATICAL CORRESPONDENCE (1980), cementing his legacy as a central figure who tirelessly defended structural rigor at the dawn of analytic philosophy.
