Une série de crimes atroces déstabilise une petite communauté. La détective Lois Tryon a l'étrange sensation d'être la cible de ces crimes, comme si quelqu'un - ou quelque chose - se moquait d'elle. À la maison, Lois doit gérer sa relation tendue avec sa fille, son mari en soins intensifs et ses propres démons intérieurs. Sans aucune piste et ne sachant pas vers qui se tourner, elle accepte l'aide de Soeur Megan, une religieuse et journaliste du Catholic Guardian. Soeur Megan, avec son propre passé difficile, a vu le pire de l'humanité, mais croit toujours en sa capacité à faire le bien. Lois, de son côté, craint que le monde ne succombe au mal. Alors que Lois et Soeur Megan rassemblent des indices, elles se retrouvent prises au piège d'une toile sinistre...
