Lata 80. Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace) odchodzi z IBM, ponieważ ma dość pracy w korporacji. Zgłasza się do małej firmy komputerowej Cardiff Electric. Liczy, że przekona jej szefów do swoich rewolucyjnych pomysłów. MacMillan już od jakiegoś czasu planuje wprowadzenie na rynek taniego, lecz przełomowego technologicznie i funkcjonalnie komputera osobistego. Pomysł walki małej firmy z gigantem, jakim jest IBM, wydaje się karkołomny. Jednak Joe jest niezłomny. Dostaje pozwolenie na zbudowanie prototypu komputera, pod warunkiem znalezienia odpowiednich fachowców. Wybór pada na młodziutką programistkę Cameron Howe (Mackenzie Davis) oraz inżyniera Gordona Clarka (Scoot McNairy). Ich skomplikowane życie osobiste nie pozostaje bez wpływu na pracę. Barwna podróż do lat 80. i opowieść o komputerowych maniakach, która zaskakuje dbałością o szczegóły i wiernym odtworzeniem realiów
