Hampton Hawes (13 novembre 1928 - 22 mai 1977) était un pianiste afro-américain de jazz. Hawes est né et a grandi à Los Angeles en Californie; avant l'âge de vingt ans il jouait déjà avec des musiciens célèbres : Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss et Wardell Gray. Hawes était membre de l'orchestre de Howard McGhee dans lequel il a joué avec Charlie Parker. Il a aussi joué avec Charles Mingus (voir l'album "Mingus Three" (1957, Roulette) et Art Pepper (Complete Surf Club Sessions (1952), Timeless (1952), Living Legend (1975)). Après avoir été dans l'armée de 1952 à 1954, Hawes forma un trio avec le bassiste Red Mitchell et le batteur Chuck Thompson. En 1958, il a été arrêté pour détention d'héroïne et emprisonné jusqu'en 1963 lorsque John F. Kennedy lui accorda la grâce présidentielle.
A sa sortie de prison, il recommença à jouer et à enregistrer. Il expérimenta la musique électronique avant de retourner finalement à la musique acoustique. Dans Raise Up Off Me, son autobiographie publiée en 1974, il raconte son expérience de la dépendance à l'héroïne, du mouvement bebop et son amitié avec quelques uns des meilleurs musiciens de l'époque. Hawes est mort d'apoplexie à l'âge de 48 ans.
