Du Panier aux quartiers nord, du Vieux Port à l'Estaque, nous suivons les pérégrinations de Fabio Montale, flic déchu de la Brigade de surveillance des secteurs, fils d'immigrés italiens qui aime les poètes des Cahiers du Sud, la pêche, la soupe au pistou de la vieille Honorine, les bouteilles de Lagavulin, les femmes et Marseille bien sûr.

Il y a vingt ans, il y avait Lole, la belle Gitane, et, autour d'elle, Manu, Ugo, et Fabio. À présent ses deux potes de braquage sont morts d'une balle dans la peau : une pour Manu, puis une pour Ugo venu le venger... L'enquête de Fabio le plonge dans son passé trouble et les plaies à refermer se multiplient. D'autant qu'une de ses amies se fait violer et assassiner.

Dur ! "Total Khéops" comme le chante le groupe IAM. Autrement dit, bordel généralisé, fange pestilentielle dont on ne sort pas.

Le livre se termine par des témoignages à la mémoire de Jean-Claude Izzo (Sébastien Izzo, Massimo Carlotto, René Frégni, Manu Théron).
