Jimmy Powell (13 October 1942 – 13 May 2016) was a British soul and rhythm and blues singer who recorded and performed throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, one of the true veterans of the British blues scene. He released his first single "Sugar Babe" for Decca in 1962 when Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies were barely establishing themselves. Powell formed Jimmy Powell & The 5 Dimensions in 1963 as his backing band and included a young Rod Stewart on vocals and harmonica from the start. The band played at the Crawdaddy Club, one of the meccas of the early blues boom, and were signed to Pye Records, but their singles weren't often seen in public despite their high energy sound and good blues feel, strongly reminiscent of the early Stones. The Dimensions disbanded in 1965 and Powell continued to play solo with various bands, whom he invariably referred to as The Dimensions in his live shows. He left Pye to sign with the Strike label and returned to Decca in the late 1960s. In 1969 he was still recording singles and his early work was being reissued on Decca.
