Connu comme l’un des pianistes les plus prestigieux de tout le jazz américain, Junior Mance reste un maître de multiples styles dans les idiomes du blues et du jazz. Son piano caractéristique a orné les disques de nombreux musiciens légendaires, dont ceux de Cannonball Adderley, Gene Ammons, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Johnny Griffin et Buddy Guy. Cependant, malgré ses talents de sideman démontrés au début de sa carrière, Mance a constitué un vaste catalogue d’albums en tant que chef d’orchestre, et son héritage durable s’est construit sur les meilleurs d’entre eux. En septembre 1947, Mance a réalisé ses premiers enregistrements professionnels avec le saxophoniste Gene Ammons. Ils se sont séparés en 1949 lorsque Ammons s’est vu offrir la place de Stan Getz dans le Woody Herman Band, et Mance a ensuite enregistré avec Lester Young. Cette collection, rassemblant plus de cinq heures de musique réparties sur quatre disques, comprend tous les albums de Junior Mance en tant que leader durant la période pour laquelle il est le plus célébré, de son premier album à son dernier album de 1962. Comprenant huit LP complets et fidèlement remastérisés, ce coffret offrira l’introduction parfaite à l’un des talents les plus durables du jazz, ou un rappel bienvenu de son travail pour ceux qui connaissent le son du grand homme.
