Baliano, maniscalco di uno sperduto villaggio francese, viene raggiunto da Goffredo di Ibelin, che gli rivelerà essere suo padre, conducendolo poi a Gerusalemme. Qui Baliano conosce diversi personaggi, a partire dal saggio re lebbroso Baldovino IV e dal malvagio Guido di Lusignano, passando attraverso il crudele Reginaldo di Chatillon e l'affascinante principessa Sibilla, sorella del re e moglie di Guido di Lusignano. Baliano si ritrova così in un territorio sconosciuto, dove regna una precaria tregua d'armi tra il re e il sultano Saladino. La tregua però non può durare a causa della morte prematura del re e della nomina a re di Guido che vede nella guerra un'opportunità per costruirsi una fama e conquistare il potere. Quando Gerusalemme viene assediata da Saladino, toccherà a Baliano difendere la città e la sua popolazione. Ed egli dopo essere riuscito a difendere la città, la cede al nemico a patto che la popolazione non venga uccisa, e che possa andarsene senza che le venga fatto alcun male.
