Klaus Wiese is one of the foremost explorers of ethnic and meditation musics in Germany. His known roots go back to the early days of the acoustic incarnation of Popol Vuh, appearing on their HOSIANNA MANTRA and SELIGPREISUNGEN albums. What his early origins are, apart from that, we don't know.
As an acknowledged ethno-musicologist Klaus has recorded innumerable albums of sound meditation scored for different ethnic instruments. Admittedly, as with the vast majority of Michael Vetter's output, many of these albums are to say the least, a mite one-dimensional, when listened to purely as music. Whole albums of droning Tibetan singing bowls can really numb the senses! But that is not the intention of many such releases, they are for environments and setting the mood or tone of a meditation session.
He has made some engaging albums amongst these, with the most interesting being those featuring a wide range of instruments, some that are logical steps on from the more esoteric and ethnic Popol Vuh (you'll see later Popol Vuh member Ted de Jong on some), some that are very close to traditional ethnic music, and others that are pure innovation and unique in their concoctions of sound textures, particularly those using rubbed and bowed instruments.
Here are some descriptions from Klaus Wiese's web-site... KLANGSCHALEN MEDITATION - represents the impersonal world of the sixth chakra. Besides using it for meditation this recording is very helpful for direct self-perception and for all forms of transpersonal therapies. SECRET DOCTRINE - Dedicated to his exalted Highness the late Mir Quasim of Hyderabad, emperor of both worlds. Hermetic Music, composed and performed by Klaus Wiese except "Akbars Sanctum" composed and played by Ted de Jong. TRANCE - a recording for persons experienced in the inner path, who understand the Resonance-Principle of the soul's higher Chakras. EL-HADRA - the rhythmic Trance-Meditation of the Sufis. The pulse of the rhythm corresponds at the same time with the breath and the heartbeat. This leads to FANA - the devotion to Allahs omnipotence. MYSTIC LANDSCAPES - presents Hermetic-Trance-Music in a combination of the Space-Sound of Tibetan Singing Bowls, the Ney-Flute and the spontaneous rhythm of the Indian drum, the Tabla. The music goes back to the roots of tribal, ritual music, where Spirit and Earth are still one... "Mystic Landscapes" are the forgotten landscapes of our Psyche. MONSOON - the drunken empress of no, rules the court of the past. Dresses and ornaments from the rich beggars of Morga. Time adopted from the gentlemen of Fenà. All else behind the screen of beauty... KOAN - a roaming tiger; delay is its virtue; steadiness its principle. Unconcerned hands touch the clouds. In the end the beginning arrives without promise... THANATOS - dedicated to the power, which is called Thanatos in the Greek. Invisible, omnipresent, the night of silence, embedded in our psyche. LETHE, the river of oblivion is its virtue, time its shadow...We look forward - back...TARIQA - means "the inner path" in the language of the Sufis and speaks of those who offer their soul in divine submission. TARIQA follows EL HADRA, but goes one step further in determination It addresses those, who do not look for therapeutic crutches, but submit themselves to the Divine Will with the Breath Of The Heart.
Klaus has also recorded albums of ritual and spiritual music, of which MAHAKALA-PUJA (Akasha, MC 1985) is an example, a recording of a Buddhist meditation recorded in Tibet, overworked by Klaus Wiese and J. Zimmermann. Klaus Wiese is indeed extremely prolific, and has also worked on numerous other musicians projects, like various Mathias Grassow albums, in collaboration with Bernhard Jäger, as a member of the Nono-Orchestra, and more recently the Italian Oöphoi led projects Wouivre and Nebula.
The discography below, is (we believe) complete up to the end of 2002. Until Klaus recently launched his web-site, the chronology of all this was unknown, as many old Aquamarin releases bore no catalogue numbers or dates. It's still pretty much a guess as to where the self-released Akasha label items fit in, as these have no catalogue numbers at all! Below is an accurate as possible listing... ~ The Crack In The Cosmic Egg
