Quatorze à dix-huit candidats doivent survivre sur une île inhabitée pendant 40 jours (20 jours dans les éditions spéciales). C'est à eux de trouver de la nourriture afin d'accompagner la maigre ration de riz qui leur est fournie en début d'aventure.
