Description

* Krzysztof Kieslowski - Collected Works (5 books)
KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI (1941–1996)
was a critically acclaimed and award-winning Polish film director and screenwriter. He is known internationally for his films Dekalog (1989), The Double Life of Veronique (1991), and the Three Colours trilogy (1993–1994). His works explored deep moral, spiritual, and philosophical questions, looking closely at human fate, random chance, and personal choices, and are included in the study of film classes at universities throughout the world.
Kieślowski wrote powerful screenplays that function as distinct literary works. DECALOGUE: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1991), co-written with lawyer and writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz, adapts his acclaimed ten-part psychological drama television series based on the biblical moral codes into book form. Each installment explores characters facing one or several moral or ethical dilemmas as they reside in an austere housing project in 1980s Poland. He also collaborated with Piesiewicz on the screenplay for his final cinematic masterwork, published as THREE COLOURS TRILOGY: BLUE, WHITE, RED (1998). Based on the colors of the French flag and the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity–the three ideals of the French Revolution–Kieslowski crafted three parables of contemporary existence.
Readers can also hear the director's own voice through valuable collections of his thoughts and conversations. KIEŚLOWSKI ON KIEŚLOWSKI (1993) features extended conversations with Danusia Stok and a foreword by Stanley Kubrick where the director candidly discusses his transition from documentaries to fiction. Another important compilation, INTERVIEWS (2016), edited by Renata Bernard and Steven Woodward, compiles decades of his reflections on censorship, human nature, and artistic sacrifice. These thirty-five pieces bring together his thesis from the famous Lodz film school, a manifesto written just before the dark days of martial law in Poland, diary entries from the first time he was working outside Poland, and numerous rare interviews from Polish-, French-, and English-language sources.
I'M SO-SO (1998), issued by the State Academy of Arts in Stuttgart, is a short compilation of autobiographical statements, interviews, and writings, arranged broadly chronologically from his childhood and family background through his years at the Łódź Film School and his early documentary and feature-film career, censorship and political experience. It includes reflections on filmmaking, memory, childhood, religion, politics, censorship, success, and Kieślowski's changing conception of documentary and fiction, as well as specific pieces on subjects such as Juliette Binoche and a substantial interview concerning Three Colours. The volume also contains a posthumous remembrance of Kieślowski by Krzysztof Zanussi and an extensive filmography with synopses and production information.
