?On ne présente plus ce géant qui a enregistré 37 albums de Blues et qui a vu passer certaines célébrités au sein de sa formation, comme le guitariste John Primer, Danny O’Connor, David Sims, Jake Dawson, Michael Dotson ou son frère Nick Holt, et j’en passe… Il a également fréquenté plusieurs labels, mais c’est Wolf Records
A l'image du titre d'ouverture, tout ici sent bon le Blues des racines. Un son de guitare sorti tout droit des 70's, un jeu toujours aussi habité qui ne cherche jamais la démonstration, des tripes et du cœur (et des chœurs, ceux des Teardrops). Si vous cherchez un Blues puissant ou teinté de modernité, passez votre chemin. Ici tout est minimaliste, texte, voix tannée comme du vieux cuir mais jamais lasse d'avoir trop chanté ('How Much More Long'), guitare vintage et groupe discret mais en terrain conquis, assurant avec aplomb. Le saturant 'Girl What You Want To Me', par exemple, et le shuffle du 'Gambling Blues' rappellent les grandes heures des Chuck Berry et Fats Domino, au point que nous jurerions entendre de ci de là des craquements de sillons.
Chaque titre ici, du galopant 'I Got Money' au languissant 'Hard Luck Blues' transpire la simplicité et le naturel, au point que certains d'entre eux, comme 'Champagne And Reefer', semblent avoir été enregistrés dans une vieille grange du Mississippi avec deux micros et une vieille sono à lampe (sur laquelle Robert Johnson a sans doute enregistré son premier titre).
L'âge ne semble pas faire peur à ce vieux briscard car nous trouvons ici, contrairement à certains anciens albums, bien plus de titres up-tempo (de ceux qui ont donné naissance au Rock'n'roll) que de slow Blues (le meilleur étant sans doute 'Older Woman' au texte délicieux). Bref, Magic Slim ne surfe pas sur la vague vintage, il est vintage, et c'est pour cela qu'on l'aime...par MusicWaves

Dernier album de Magic Slim avec son excellent groupe (Jon Mac Donald, Andre Howard, Brian Jones). Produit par Michael Blakemore et Jerry Del Giudice, on trouve un programme solide et inspiré avec de superbes moments comme le remarquable "Bad boy", "Someone else is steppin' in", "Sunrise blues", "Gambling blues", "How much more long", "Matchbox blues" sans oublier l'instrumental final "Country joyride".
