Court métrage expérimental et documentaire réalisé par Charles Sheeler et

Paul Strand, Manhatta est considéré comme l’un des tout premiers films

de type « city symphony ».

À travers une succession de plans fixes et composés avec rigueur, le film

propose une vision poétique et moderniste de New York au début du XXe siècle.

L’architecture, les flux urbains, le port, les immeubles et la vie quotidienne

y sont montrés comme un ensemble rythmé et structuré.

Inspiré par les écrits de Walt Whitman, Manhatta occupe une place importante

dans l’histoire du cinéma expérimental et documentaire, et demeure un jalon

majeur dans la représentation cinématographique de la ville moderne.
