Prepare bassist Mark Dresser a meal, and don’t be surprised if he turns it into
a song. One of his recent compositions, “Canales Rose,” is named for Dresser’s
chef friend Paul Canales, and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa’s alto lines
reflect the ebullient feelings that the bandleader mentions in his liner notes
to the CD on which the song appears, Nourishments. But that saxophone solo is
just one ingredient in a piece that traverses tricky rhythmic changes without
losing its ethereal qualities. The album is filled with all sorts of such
thrilling, unusual performances. Denman Maroney plays his “hyperpiano” style
here, applying tools to the instrument’s strings. The results create a sense of
tension, particularly on “Para Waltz” and in his dialog with trombonist Michael
Dessen on the blues tune “Aperitivo.” Drummers Tom Rainey and Michael Sarin
alternate on the disc’s tracks, with the latter offering his lively challenges
to the quintet on the title tune.
