While known for his intuitive work with the likes of Ivo Perelman, pianist
Matthew Shipp shows a hidden card trick here with a rich sense of lyricism on
this trio album with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker. The
nine songs range from a concise 49 seconds to a stretched out 16+ minutes, and
each song never seems too over or understay its welcome.
Shipp’s melodic feel mixes post bop with free thinking not unlike Andrew Hill,
as the thoughtful title track combines a classical tone with flowing
musicality. He makes dots and dashes between strokes of bass and drums for the
freebopper “The Way” and uses space as a sound on the prismatic “Speech of
Form”.” Baker is crisp on the snare for “Snap” and Bisio bows with subtones
during “Deep to Deep” getting a chance to air out after the Neopolitan traffic
jam of “This Matrix.” But even here, there’s always the marrow and dna of
vintage bebop whispering through the fingers.
