MEIR SHALEV (b. 1948) is a bestselling Israeli author and columnist. His work has been translated into 26 languages and has been often compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez for his ability to "create worlds inhabited by the richness of invention and obsessiveness of dreams" (New York Times Book Review).

His first novel, THE BLUE MOUNTAIN (1988), paints an extraordinary picture of a small community of Ukrainian immigrants as they pioneer a new life in Israel over three generations, and is one of the of the top 5 bestsellers in Israeli publishing history. THE LOVES OF JUDITH (1994), set in a small agricultural village in 1930s Palestine, is a magical novel of the joys and secrets of village life, of an unconventional family, and the unexpected fruits of love. A PIGEON AND A BOY (2006), for which Shalev received both the National Jewish Book Award and Israel’s Brenner Prize, contains two love stories, separated by half a century but connected by one enchanting act of devotion. His most recent novel, TWO SHE-BEARS (2013), depicts village love and vengeance in the early days of British Palestine that is still being played out two generations later in present-day Israel.

MY RUSSIAN GRANDMOTHER (2009) is a charming and unconventional family memoir focusing on the author's joyful boyhood spent with his grandparents Aharon and Tonia through the decades following their migration to Palestine in the 1920s. In BEGINNINGS (2011), Shalev explores the many "firsts" of the Bible -- the first love and the first death, to the first laugh and the first dream -- providing a fresh, secular and surprising look at the stories we think we know.
