Paris, 1899. Céleste, danseuse de Cancan dans un cabaret de Montmartre, tente désespérément de retrouver le frère et la soeur dont elle a été séparée brutalement enfant quand leur père a été assassiné sous leurs yeux. Pour pouvoir payer Léon, l'inspecteur chargé de les retrouver, elle n'a d'autre choix que de danser nue. Elle devient ainsi la première effeuilleuse de Paris et fait scandale bien malgré elle. De spectacle en spectacle, à mesure qu'elle prend de l'assurance, une nouvelle vie s'offre à elle mais les démons de son passé ne cessent de la rattraper.
