Another masterstroke from the maestro, Oren Ambarchi, this time in conjunction with a 20-piece ensemble conducted by Ilan Volkov and featuring members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra & Speak Percussion. Oren's 4th LP release of 2015 already (and it's only May!) presents a necessary space for unconscious meditation following a vintage streak of releases as diverse as they are brilliant and challenging in their respective forms. As the title alludes, 'Sleepwalker's Conviction' can be taken as a study of unconsciousness manifest in sound, a continuation of Oren's preternaturally attuned improv skills and the potential for sound to transport us out of the body to somewhere "higher" or other. It does so with glacial subtlety, lead by Ambarchi's sub-bass guitar presence and keening Leslie strokes amidst the sonorous rumble of massed percussion that never breaks and cavernous, portent brass drones which remain poised yet somehow deliquescent to the mix, sensitively executed by Joe Talia with Oren Ambarchi, and faithfully mastered by Rashad Becker. - boomkat.com
