Paice Ashton Lord is a British rock band formed in August 1976 by Jon Lord and Ian Paice after the breakup of Deep Purple. Lord and Pace have invited vocalist and keyboardist Tony Ashton, known for his work in the Ashton, Gardner & Dyke project, to their new project. Ashton was also a friend of Jon Lord and had helped him earlier on his solo album First Of The Big Bands. It was assumed that David Coverdale would become the vocalist of the group, but he chose to pursue a solo career. The bassist and guitarist were found through an advertisement in the newspaper - the band's guitarist was Bernie Marsden, who previously played in the bands UFO, Wild Turkey, Hammer and Babe Ruth; bassist Paul Martinez, who started his career with Hackensack. Lord and Pace invested more than £100,000 into the promotion of the new project and began recording the album Malice In Wonderland, which was released in February 1977. The band embarked on a 20-show European tour, but was cut short after five shows in the UK. Ashton, accustomed to performing in small clubs, felt uncomfortable in large halls, plus he drank seriously and even fell off the stage at one of the concerts. The band's first performance was recorded by the BBC for their "Sight And Sound In Concert" series and was also broadcast on television. After some time, the group began recording the second album, however, they managed to record only instrumental parts. But at this point, Tony Ashton leaves the group. Soon Bernie Marsden also leaves the group, who was lured by David Coverdale to the Whitesnake group he created. After that, the group breaks up
