The BBC Collection est l’intégrale des enregistrements de Rory Gallagher à la BBC.
Le coffret comprend dix-huit CD de concerts et de sessions radiophoniques de 1971 à 1986, dont environ 75 % n'ont jamais été publiés officiellement, ainsi que 2 Blu-Ray vidéo des concerts télévisés de la BBC et de performances en studio de 1973 à 1984, qui n'ont également jamais fait l'objet de publication officielle.
L’ensemble de ces enregistrements couvre 16 ans de la carrière de Rory Gallagher (1971-1986), avec des moments très forts...
Depuis le rachat du catalogue solo de Rory Gallagher en 2017, Universal mène un travail de valorisation patrimoniale absolument exemplaire dont on rêverait qu’il s’applique aussi à d’autres d’artistes régulièrement célébrés dans Soul Bag.
Après avoir réédité l’ensemble des albums du musicien irlandais en 2018 (productions studio, live, posthumes ; en CD et en vinyle 180 gr), les fans ont eu le bonheur de voir atterrir dans les bacs le recueil “Blues” (3 CD constitués à 90 % de matériel inédit ; 2019), “Check Shirt Wizard: Live in ’77” (2 CD extraits de prestations bouillantes données lors de la mythique tournée anglaise de 1977 ; 2020), “Rory Gallagher 50th Anniversary Edition” (réédition 4 CD + DVD du premier LP solo de Rory, agrémentée de 30 plages inédites ; 2021) et “Deuce 50th Anniversary Edition” (réédition 4 CD de son 2e album solo, comprenant 28 prises alternatives et 13 interprétations live contemporaines ; 2022).
Après une pause en 2023, Panthéon, division d’Universal spécialisée dans les rééditions haut de gamme, annonce pour le 11 octobre 2024 la sortie d’un coffret pantagruélique consacré aux concerts donnés par Rory pour la BBC. Le contenu donne le tournis : 18 CD et 2 blu-ray décrits comme « la collection définitive des performances enregistrées de Rory Gallagher à la BBC ».
Le guitariste et auteur-compositeur irlandais a été l’un des musiciens les plus enregistrés des années 1970 par la radio anglaise. Ce boîtier monumental a été élaboré à partir des bandes originales des archives de la BBC. Plus des trois quarts des enregistrements audio sont inédits (dont plusieurs captés hors antenne) et si les amateurs s’en échangeaient de longue date des extraits sous format pirate, la qualité sonore à laquelle Panthéon nous a habitués promet une expérience d’écoute exceptionnelle.
Ce recueil retrace 16 ans de carrière de Gallagher (1971-1986) et comprend entre autres le concert “Sight & Sound” diffusé en 1977 à la télévision et à la radio, la prestation bouillante donnée par Rory en tête d’affiche au Festival de Reading en 1980 et le concert “At Midnight” en direct de l’Ulster Hall de Belfast en 1984. Les blu-ray se concentrent sur des concerts télévisés de la BBC et des performances en studio de 1973 à 1984.
Cette édition super deluxe se voit complétée d’un livret comprenant de nombreuses photos jamais publiées ainsi qu’un essai de plus de 5 000 mots écrit par Colin Harper avec de nouvelles interviews du producteur de la BBC Jeff Griffin, du bassiste et fidèle collaborateur de Rory Gerry McAvoy et de quelques-uns de ses pairs des années 1970 comme Andy Roberts (Plainsong, Liverpool Scene, etc.), Barry Devlin (Horslips), Jake Burns (SLF) et Dave McLarnon (Shock Treatment). En parallèle, Panthéon sortira des versions plus accessibles en 2 CD ou 3LP (“The Best of Rory Gallagher à la BBC”)...par SoulBag
