Radio France, la Radio Suisse Romande, la RTBF et Radio Canada ont ainsi pioché dans leurs archives et ont exhumé des enregistrements inédits, dont deux chansons, pour réaliser cette série d'émission d'une grande qualité. Jean-Luc Lehmann, Stéphane Deschamps et Thierry Chatel ont, à partir de ces enregistrements, réinventé la vie et l'oeuvre de Serge Gainsbourg grâce à un récit par thèmes musicaux. Une façon originale d'approcher la complexité musicale de l'oeuvre de Gainsbourg, qui est passé par le jazz, le funk, la world music, le reggae ou encore le disco.
